The Oscars

Every year, almost without fail, I watch the Oscars. I might have missed it once in high school and I remember missing it in 1992 when I was in rehearsals for Les Liaisons Dangereuses on stage down in San Diego. (I think it was tech week and the director wouldn't let us leave, but I remember it was the year Silence of the Lambs won for best picture.)

It was always an event in my family. It was one of three nights a year we could eat dinner in front of the T.V. (The other two were when Sound of Music and Wizard of Oz were on!)

I remember in Junior High passing a note on Oscar day to my world geography teacher Mr. Meierding.
It went something like this ...

Dear Mr. Meierding,
I am not sure if you are aware,
but tonight is the 54th Annual
Academy Awards ceremony.
I can't watch until my homework
is done and the movie stars start
walking in around 4 o'clock.
Please help.

I left the origami folded note anonymously on his desk.

I can't remember what else I wrote but at the end of class my teacher announced there would be no homework assignments, as he had been informed that it was Oscar night and decided to let us off the hook. Noone could believe it, except my friend Lisa who smiled at me, knowing it had to be me that had swindled this wonderful turn of events.

For me it's been an odd year for movies. I like them, and in some cases I actually liked them a lot. But alas I was not in love. There are no movies that I will watch over and over until I can quote them to my friends or movies that so moved me they changed my view of the world. I am actually more excited about the documentary category this year! The Cove? Food Inc.? For some rentals I loved, you can check a couple of my quick reviews.

Anyway, whether you watch for the stars, the movies, the fashion or for an excuse to drink champagne ... skip your homework and enjoy Oscar Sunday!

What was your favorite movie this year? Maybe I missed it!

Thank you for visiting and for your comment. Those mitts are made from leftover odds and ends of yarn, and are a one off for my hands.

Hoping that you will visit again.

Used to see so many movies, less now. I would love to see Carey Mulligan get an Oscar tonight.

Best wishes from the east coast.

yeah...Like you I wasn't blown away by the ones I saw...they were good. Not great. Drank our champagne, and didn't do homework, though!

The only 'new' movie I saw from Oscar's picks was the new Cohen brothers movie 'A serious man'. Funny and strange as only the Cohen brothers can be. I did watch a fantastic music movie the other night which is a few years old. It's called 'Once'. Set in Dublin about an Irish busker and a Czek girl who have the most tender love affair without actually 'having' and affair. The songwriting in it is amazing...

UP from Pixar, I mean, it´s great, very touching.
There´s another great movie around that wasn´t nominated named "AGORA" by Alexander Amenabar.
I´m curious to watch a serious man and the Cove.
And screw Avatar, everyone can do good cinema with millions of dollars, and Avatar isn´t a great film. It´s just something curious and out of the ordinary.

Frances and Gina ... I did love Carey Mulligan in An Education. She was amazing and of course, adorable.

Bonequinhoda ... I need to see UP! It does look great. Wish I had seen it on the big screen.

Kerry, I did see Once. I rented it this year and loved it. I even went on iTunes to get the music! I like those kind of movies!

PK, I saw Avatar in 3D. The creativity was pretty inspiring! I thought parts of it were beautiful when everything was glowing and when they were flying ... Then all of the sudden 3/4 through the movie I thought I was suddenly in Transformers! And I really wish James Cameron would get a script doctor for his dialog! (I said this when Titanic came out. sheesh!)

Ruthie, I will put Time Traveler's Wife in my Netflix queue ... love both of those actors!

"This is It" blew this musical family away

Theresa, you are right ... "This Is It" was great! And so inspiring, as an artist. See? All about the documentary this year!
