Well, I guess I am on a theme this week with all the kids. I just decided to go with it!
One of the things that was so special about the Calendimaggio Festival in Assisi was seeing how the whole community was involved, including the kids! Moms and dad's and grandpas ... siblings and pals. It was so fun to watch their enthusiasm and joy, though some of the tiny ones didn't quite know what was going on and the drums were a little loud for others. They were all so cute, I just had to share!

Even the teenagers are into it!!!
And those babies!!!
Amazing - does the whole town participate? Do they make their own costumes or i this an industry of the town?
Susan, it does seem that almost the whole town participates. The costumes for the big processions are passed down and kept in families but they make new costumes for the big production scenes (which have to be in the many hundreds.)
They work for a year on the whole thing and I was told it is not for tourists (though we love it!) but something for themselves and that they are completely passionate about it.
It's also a competition between upper and lower Assisi which gets everyone revved up!
The main industry however, in Assisi is St. Francis with visitors coming from all over. It's one of the main pilgrimage sites in the world, plus the basilica for art lovers is a must see for some of the most famous frescos.
Kathy, the teenagers are completely into it! A lady I met there who is American talked about the passion they all put into ... that it's part of who they are. And, I know the babies are so cute!
Thanks Kiki!!! Your comment is so sweet. You are definitely going to have to go one day and celebrate your heritage!!!
How precious! Love the last photo especially and all the matching ladies and babies costumes...
Precious photos and precious memories I'm sure The costumes are so detailed and beautiful.
Loree expressed my feelings exactly, precious photos and precious memories!
Somehow I never made it there, but one day I will.
Thank you for reminding me of this event!
