Pastel Society Show in Thousand Oaks!

Hi all! My current show is up! It's actually a group show. For those of you who don't know, I am a member of the Pastel Society of the Gold Coast. It's an amazing group of artists that I am very honored to be involved with and included in!

This is my 3rd year in the group, and 3rd year participating in the Thousand Oaks show, which is usually our biggest of the year. This year it benefits the Camarillo Hospice. (See info above.)

One of the pieces I put in the show, is Autumn Reflections. It started with a watercolor underpainting ...

Then little by little, I began to add in my pastels over the top ...

The painting is inspired by this photo (below) from the Yosemite Valley back in 1999, that I took while visiting my grandmother, who lived nearby in Mariposa. 

I changed the season a bit. I nixed the bits of ice/snow around the rocks. I figured it would have to get very "nit-picky" in order for you to really read that it was snow, so I edited as well as cropped the picture. I also changed the light and color of the sky so it would not get too "cartoony" hued.

And then, more rocks in the water, and punching up the lights and darks. 

 And violà!!

It was one of the 3 pieces voted on to be submitted for publicity and it ended up in the little Thousand Oaks paper. :)

This weekend is the reception and it runs until the 27th of July!

Fall Into Pastels - at the Ojai Art Center!

The Show opens in Ojai, a week from today! The reception will be on Sunday the 4th (a week from tomorrow!) so if you are in the neighborhood ...

OH! Also, note whose art made it on the postcard and evite! :) I was so excited, very flattered and humbled, since there are so many great artists in the group!

Since I shared Spring ... I thought I'd share Autumn. 

And who doesn't love Vivaldi?!

Southern California in Pastel

I can't believe it's July! In fact, we took down the UCSB/Cheadle Center show last Thursday and the new "Passion for Pastels" show was hung yesterday!

The reception will be next Sunday the 8th, in the Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park area from 1-4:00pm. So, if you are in the neighborhood ...

Anyway ... I am back in LA after house-sitting in Ojai for 6 weeks!!! It's kind of weird to be back, in part because, with all of my stuff unloaded from my car (but not organized) my place looks like a set from a disaster movie.

I am hitting the ground running with summer workshops. They got someone to cover the first two weeks, so I will be teaching the next 8, which started, for me, this morning. It's a great group of kids ranging from about 7 to 14. Hadn't seen the teenage girls for awhile and now they are towering over me! What do they feed these kids? As usual, I will be sharing some of the amazing and inspiring work these kids do.

Well, I am off to the bank and to tackle several bags of clothes that I need to either wash or put away!

March Afternoon

My first show with Pastel Society of the Gold Coast is going to be May 2, at the Faculty Club at U.C.S.B. It benefits the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Restoration's educational outreach to the community and research on wildlife-friendly corridors on campus lands. So, if you are in the area ... come to the show!

We are supposed to do art from the area around campus, so I drove up week before last to take some pictures. It had been cloudy in parts of the L.A. and Ventura so I wasn't sure what the weather would be like. As you can see, it was a glorious spring day. I lucked out! As I mentioned before, I stayed up there taking photos until sunset so ... stay tuned for part 2!

This is the postcard for the show at U.C.S.B., with a beautiful pastel by Lynn Byrne Simon, that she donated for 5 dollar raffle! A Bert Collins piece will also be raffled off! I am definitely buying some tickets!
