Amalfi ... "When fate hands you lemons ..."

The Amalfi Coast

When life gave them lemons ...

They made ceramic tiles

plates

dishtowels

fabric handbags

soap

and of course, my personal favorite ...

LIMONCELLO!

which I had at almost every meal!

I was feeling the need for a dose of Italy today and with some crazy weather back East and around the globe I figured everybody might need a little sunshine. These were taken on my trip last May. Of course, it would be lovely to hop on a plane and be back there but until then, I might just pull my little bottle of limoncello out of the freezer, close my eyes and ... pretend for a moment that I am back on the Amalfi Coast.

Ahhh.

(or if fate hand you several ... make limoncello!)

Have a fantastic weekend!

Santa Maria Maggiore e Duomo di Amalfi ... a little more Italy for Christmas!

Well, Rome and Amalfi. After my post a couple of days ago on one of Rome's many beautiful churches, I heard about the attacks on the embassies in Rome. It's sad and shocking but all the more reason for prayer and shining the light of love into the world.

I have been reading a book about the Renaissance poet Vittoria Colonna. (1490-1547) It's called "Sonnets for Michelangelo" after a book of her poems she had bound for him as a gift.

Below is one of her sonnets with an English Translation.

Founded in the 4th century
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary
Byzantine and Paleochristian architecture
Fully restored in the 18th century
It's huge.

How much joy brought to the hearts
of the wise kings from the magnificent East,
O sign and burning star, when you fixed your beautiful
living rays upon that happy lowly hut.

Quanta gioia, tu segno e ardente,
Alor che i vivi bei raggi fermaste
Sul tugurio felice, al cor mandaste
De i saggi re del bel ricco oriente.

And you kings, how much more did your love your own great king,
how much higher and more powerful did you consider him,
the more lowly you found him then, swaddle tiny and poor,
and his great humility lifted your souls to heaven.

E voi, quanto piu` basso il re possente
Fasciato, picciolin, pover trovaste,
Pui` grande, alto il vedeste e pui` l'amaste,
Ch'al ciel tanta umilita` v'alzo` la mente.

The stable, the animals, the cold, and the hay,
and his poor rags, and his hard bed,
all were a sure sign of his celestial grace;

Il loco, gli animali, il freddo e 'l fieno
Davano, e i panni vili, e il duro letto,
De l'alta sua bonta` sicuro segno;

Then, your hearts filled with joy, you worshiped
that star and the sweet countenance
of our Lord, holding your gifts before you.

E per la stella e per lo chiaro aspetto
De la potenzia, avendo in mano il pegno,
L'adoraste col cor di gaudio pieno

Buon Natale!
Merry Christmas my dear friends!
Blessings and light to you all!

Quiet Corners ~ Amalfi

These quiet corners of Amalfi make me want to transport myself, teleport myself or somehow just jump into the photos ... to be in that paradise and perhaps even have a chocolate gelato in my hand!

I am having a crazy week. Not bad or anything, just a little crazy. I am looking forward to Monday and having a chance to have a nice pot of my coconut green tea and catch up with you all on your lovely blogs!

So, the challenge today (and always really) is being in the moment and finding paradise wherever you happen to be. O.K., if paradise seems like a lot to ask, than perhaps peace and definitely love. ;)

When you look for holy ground,
look down.

That's where your spiritual experience takes place.
Right where you're standing,
wherever you are now.

Amalfi At The Beach and Beginning Italian!

After a bit of debate on whether to head to Capri, Amalfi or Sorrento for a little day trip from Positano, we decided to take the boat to Amalfi. That was a place my parents had never been and we decided to go somewhere that was new to all of us. The weather was pretty cloudy when we arrived but some rather strong crazy winds eventually carried the clouds away.

I love red and white (can you tell?) and against the amazing water of the mediterranean, it was spectacular. This beach was just below where we had lunch. I'll have to find the business card because the salads were amazing, the homemade limoncello might have been the best we ever had, and the view? Well ... it doesn't get much better than this!

Tonight I begin my first Italian class, so please wish me luck!!!
Grazie!
